I bet none of you remember this character. And to be honest, I don't blame you. A one off background character from "The Glippo Show!" in Ed, Edd, n Eddy. I decided to doodle him for inktober ((Too bad I can't seem to write straight for shit)) #inktober #inktober2018 #TheGlippoShow #Glippo #Cartoon #Cartoons #artistsoninstagram #blessedthekid #thefourthed #deviantart #cartoonetwork #ededdneddy #inkblot #rubberhose #blackandwhite #childhood #cartooncartoonfridays #eene https://www.instagram.com/p/BpDE7W5lEnc/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1jowkd2h2tlj5
I tried to make this entry a few weeks ago but it didn't save as a draft because I'm still learning tumblr and I'm dumb. I'm doing it now but I'm on someone else's computer and it's making it very difficult to take screenshots and type (the page freezes every sentence) so please excuse any mistakes I make.
'Ed n Seek' is titled after the game Hide and Seek. The episode is about the characters playing that game. This is PROBABLY the easiest title to remember in the entirety of EEnE.
The title card is an image of a blond/blue-eyed boy (Jimmy?) counting backwards from 100 behind a tree. A bird watches in horror as eyes peer out of its nest, being one of the hiders. Three other sets of eyes are around, also watching the seeker.
Edit 9/27/2014: We now know this was at least partially boarded by Karen Lloyd. "Dueling Eds" also has a rather subtler "in" joke, but Danny picked up on it right away when I showed him - when Edd's shorts are filled with eels, he starts to wave his arms rapidly up and down and make "ooh" noises, just as almost everybody did when Karen Lloyd storyboarded (season one.) Some prime moments can be found in " Ed n Seek" and "It's way Ed" --Scott Diggs
We pan around Ed’s living room. Eddy pops out of the couch!
Eddy blows away a lint ball as delicately as possible and asks Ed for a report.
Ed is eating 3 potato chips and has found a chipped button.
Ed invites Edd to couch dive with them and then crawls into the cushion like a bug.
Edd is afraid of “nasty scratches from upholstery tags” and is instead on the floor with a flashlight. I never really thought about how silly that line is before, hahahaha. He's not scared of something legitimate like a spring or a cushion zipper scratching him, just upholstery tags.
Ed finds something!
Edd: Dust mites!?
Eddy: Cash!?
Ed found his lost issue of SLUG-U-LA MAGAZINE! I’m not sure how this could be a magazine, it sounds more like a comic book... How many articles could one possibly write that pertains to the subject of whatever a Slug-u-la is?
A door opens. ...There isn’t normally a door next to the CAT picture, that should just be an opening to the hallway/kitchen, but whatevs.
Jonny runs right through Ed’s house without introducing himself. What’s worse, he’s not even coming in through the front door. How many rooms has he been running through uninvited!?
Jonny uses Plank as a divining rod. Plank has his weird season 1 cheek.
Using the power of TEAMWORK, they find Sarah hiding in a vase! I should find this weird, but EEnE has desensitized me.
The two kids leave and Ed goes wall-eyed to look at both his friends in confusion. They have sat in quiet awe through all of this.
The Eds run outside and see the kids running around. Those pink and blue houses don’t really exist on the cul-de-sac.
Kevin is an ass and runs the Eds over for no reason. Eddy catches Rolf but Rolf hides underground, either claiming to be a vegetable or invisible, it’s hard to hear him underground.
He does say he’s gone to the market...
Meanwhile, in some weird neighborhood where a garage is apparently someone’s entire house, Kevin is biking with a ridiculous face.
Eddy hops on the bike and Kevin is now in that weird pink and yellow neighborhood we see a lot in season 1.
Kevin bikes up and into a tree SOMEHOW. Suddenly the neighborhood is looking a bit more normal, that even kinda looks like Edd’s house back there!
Sarah yells READY OR NOT HERE I COME and the Eds finally catch on that this is hide and seek. They proceed to ruin the game. This is a pretty good explanation for why the kids hate the Eds.
Ed begs with her, and he sounds more like a teenager and less dumb, it's really strange. Sarah does this weird thinking face before yelling no.
This is my begging face.
Eddy tries to bribe her with Jonny 2x4's spot. Ed ups the ante.
Look at these different reactions to having their game ruined, hahaha. Jimmy and Jonny are confused as usual, Kevin and Rolf are understandably mad, but Nazz is smirking! NAZZ, YOU HAVE NOTHING TO FEEL MISCHIEVOUS ABOUT, YOU JUST LOST. She’s looking at Rolf, but why?
The kids confer on whether or not the Eds can join. Kevin loudly says DORKS amongst the murmur.
Jimmy tells the Eds they can play. Since when is JIMMY the leader of the kids?
HAHAHA LOOK AT THESE FACES. Why is Sarah the only one mad? Rolf and Jonny have both gone lazy eyed, Nazz is either looking seductive, humored, or sassy, and Kevin is giving the Eds the cutest excited smile. AND LOOK AT HIS BABY HANDS.
The Eds are so happy, look at these cuties doing a freeze frame jump!
But Kevin informs them that the Eds have to be IT.
Despite this initial reaction, Eddy decides it’ll be a piece of cake.
In front of some non-canon house that vaguely resembles Rolf’s, the Eds start counting.
Eddy cheats and skips to 100, but the kids all touch home base immediately.
None of the kids are wiggling, Jimmy’s doing a weird open mouth smile, and Sarah’s got creepy baby fangs.
Eddy knows they have to do something about this “home free” thing.
I really like the angle of this shot, even though I just noticed it’s in front of that weird house that was just a garage.
Anyway, fade to black and the Eds have UPROOTED AN ENTIRE TREE. Ed is pulling it around (as well as his two friends) in a wagon as if they weigh nothing. I don’t know why the Eds aren’t accused of cheating because of this, I guess the kids just didn’t want to be tagged if they came out to yell at the Eds.
Eddy still isn’t satisfied with how this is going. I’d ask why he wanted to play this game if he apparently hates it so much, but I guess he just likes the hiding part.
He knows just how to get the kids out!
By acting like distressed woman!
It doesn’t work so Ed pretends that Plank’s mom is calling. In season 4 we actually do meet Plank’s mom. I’d suggest connecting this to that, but Ed is clearly pointing at the tree.
Plank pops out of a bush but Eddy doesn’t see it and thinks the kids are cheating... at hiding. Ed thinks they should feed the kids. Edd has an idea!
Body-heat seeking goggles! Eddy is suspicious of their abilities and quick to say they don’t work. Ed is begging in his weird teenager voice yet again.
This is a really funny screenshot to me. Eddy has his brother’s chin and is looking like a total jerk, the goggles are so uneven and wonky, and his pose is so stern and serious. Meanwhile, Ed's begging at his feet, and drawn really wrinkly.
Edd turns on the goggles for Eddy and he sees this...
Eddy freaks out and gives Ed the goggles finally. Ed says this is how the monster in The Brainless Cyclops saw his victims. He attacks Edd.
Eddy says quit laying around, just like every insensitive friend in a comedy show.
The Eds are really in gear now!
Eddy calls Ed a brainless cyclops and Ed seems to pause for a second like he’s offended, but then laughs some more. They arrive at a familiar looking shed...
IT’S THE ‘ED THE GREAT’ SHED FROM ‘OVER YOUR ED’, IT EVEN HAS THE CURTAINS IN IT!
oh and they find sarah
Eddy gives Ed a dog treat and Sarah gets weird baby teeth again.
This is a very nice shot of the Eds riding away with the tree, bragging at Sarah. Now, I’m pretty sure the rules are that Sarah should be it since they caught her, but the Eds proceed to seek everyone else anyway. Maybe they feel like they need to catch more people since there are 2 more ITs than usual.
On some weird noncanon brick house with an ugly green roof, Eddy finds baby hands Kevin hiding in a gutter.
In a lawnmower next to the brick house, Eddy finds Rolf eating grass for some reason. (Rolf is not pictured because they zoom in on him and then you can't see the brick house!)
Outside some blue house with two walkways, the Eds do an adorable victory dance next to the losing kids, even though they already won when they found Sarah.
I just want... another screenshot... of this dance...
Ed shows an unusual moment of focus and realizes that they forgot to find Jimmy!
The Eds soon find out that they also left home base across the street!
I don’t know why gross yellow clouds appear to be shooting out of Edd’s screaming mouth...
An amazing chase breaks out between Ed and Jimmy. Ed wins! The Eds are really lucky this episode.
Edd and Eddy cheer and chant about being able to hide and Ed says Jimmy’s IT, even though Sarah was first to lose.
As the Eds gloat to the kids and run away, a random clip of Jimmy darting his eyes is thrown in as filler animation. His background does not even appear to be outdoors, and we will be seeing this bit of animation again later in the episode. :P
Later, Eddy comes out of his house with a bunch of snacks, messes up Jimmy’s countdown to buy more time, and hides in a fake metal bush the Eds apparently have been keeping for just such an occasion...
That purple sign at the top of the metal bush says “DRINK GLUG.” There is an ad for Glug in at least one other episode. I used to imagine it as like a Slurpee, but I think a later shot will show a classic Coke bottle on the ad.
I’m also very interested in the product name “Fudge -O-”
Oh oh oh, and that is the canon design for a bag of chips in EEnE! They actually bother to make sure they have the same design in every later appearance of... a bag of chips. It’s pretty impressive to me.
Ed offers Edd “pop” and sprays Edd with it. Edd acts like his season 1 boyish self and actually retaliates!
I love season 1 Edd so much.
Eddy comes back up, sarcastically calling Edd a smart guy.
Edd is already getting prepared to hit him again! WHAT A JERK HAHA
Even better, he replied to Eddy’s “smart guy” with “Only when you’re around, Eddy.” That’s some wit, Edd! You’re gettin’ sassy.
They struggle on the trigger and accidentally double-hit Ed. Which is good because Ed is the one who hit Edd in the first place anyway.
I’ve always found these soda effects really weird looking, honestly...
DRINK GLUG!!!!!!!!!
The explosion causes the bush to rocket up and crash down to earth.
Ed n Edd start to panic, they’re exposed and Jimmy’s done counting! That bush didn’t help them even a LITTLE bit.
EDDY FLIPS OUT ABOUT THEM TOUCHING HIS FACE. That’s kind of a running gag in the series. I love that about Eddy; he’s so touchy with other people, but won’t let them touch him.
Eddy looks around for a new spot.
Eddy decides some rotting recycling bin (why are recyclables LEAKING so much?) is the perfect hiding place.
RANDOM KANKERS!!!
But they are gotten rid of quickly. They still haven’t managed to kiss the Eds even once!
Ed n Edd try hiding behind Eddy and Eddy runs off. WE FADE TO THAT FILLER SHOT OF JIMMY.
Ooh, but he smiles this time!
But that background still doesn’t look much like the outdoors he’s supposed to be in...
I love Jimmy, he’s so cute.
The Eds dart by him. He gets into Eddy’s house somehow. I think this is the first time we see Eddy’s living room! But there’s no setup of this being Eddy’s house, so it took me forever to know who this room belonged to.
Eddy hides by posing seductively in a portrait somehow. Eddy, you’re getting frilly!
Jimmy checks under Eddy’s fish tank, which clearly has no Eds in it. Eddy’s pets are really cute, so here’s a closeup of them!
Oh, apparently Edd’s been swimming in there and turning invisible!
Jimmy passes by my favorite show in the EEnE-verse... THE GLIPPO SHOW
Ed hid INSIDE THE TV SHOW. I love his old-timey design (especially his Disney gloves), I love that city, and I love Glippo’s guitar, there are not enough guitars in EEnE.
A “hahaha” speech card pops up because it’s a silent movie. The card says AKA on it, so I guess in this world AKA’s been making cartoons since the 1930s or so.
In this next shot, they play the animation backwards (just to fill that little TV screen) and Ed goes back in the trunk.
That closet doesn’t make sense. That wall should be right next to the outdoors, the closet would need an extension next to his front door...
Also, I could've sworn that filler animation of Jimmy looking around was going to come back during this scene, but I guess not, this is the last we see of Jimmy in this episode. It would've made more sense here, since the filler background looked sort of like the color of Eddy's living room walls.
Oh look, we DO see that this is Eddy’s house!
The Eds make a break from Home Base and they’re free! They win the game!
But all three Eds jump on the tree and accidentally push the wagon down a hill.
They knock down a bunch more trees. I never really think about the map in this scene, but this could plausibly be a different neighborhood. The houses aren’t exactly familiar and there appeared to be a hill for the Eds to roll down.
Ed is fine! He picks up the tree three times to gloat at the other kids.
Edd and Eddy are not fine and Ed lets the tree bonk them on the head a bunch of times.
That last gag never really sat right with me, but they’ve dealt with worse pain I guess... and they did win the game they were trying to win! I’m going to consider this episode a WIN.
Nice episode overall, but I wish I could hurry up and get to the later seasons! Season 1 episodes are so straight forward, I feel like I have to stretch for things to discuss.
