Well after I decided I REALLY wanted to stop biting my nails and it wasn't just a passive "oh i wish i could stop" I did the thing where I "protected" a couple nails and the rest were fair game. Sure it looked silly for a bit, but i just kept "protecting" a new finger after a week or so. Gradually they started getting longer and i painted them (I HATE THE TASTE OF PAINT) and the addiction kinda fell away.

Although sometimes now when one breaks i have erges to bite the fuck out of it, but i remember how nice they look when theyre at a healthy length and stop myself again.
