ww1 was this giant wakeup call - it's even taught as monumental "oh fuck" kind of event - yet over a century of successive governments and many of the general population learned precisely zero (0) lessons from it.

these are the mistakes we're doomed to repeat. nationalism, arms races (those alliances of military force were the pre-nuclear version of MAD), glorification of war, colonialism, post-war diplomacy (fascism was arriving regardless, but bullying Germany was hardly a good idea lmao), rise of fascism and other ultra-reactionary and -militaristic ideologies, and lots more I can't think of right now

Ok have any of you ever thought about how fucked up the idea of a global superpower is? Like not only are the superpowers always  the countries that prioritize economic growth and political capital over the wellbeing of their citizens (see soviet russia, america) but why does a country have to or want to dominate all other countries. That's not diplomacy, that's supremacy. the goal of international relations shouldn't be to be better than everyone else, it should be to create a world where everyone is appreciated for their virtues and called out for their faults.

Linguist Noam Chomsky says the decline in American power has been “increasingly self-inflicted” in recent decades.

In the first part of a two-part column for TomDispatch, the political activist argues that America’s decline is very real.

To make the point that the damage has been self-inflicted, Chomsky cites a recent issue of Foreign Affairs that asks “Is America Over?”

“The title article calls for ‘retrenchment’ in the ‘humanitarian missions’ abroad that are consuming the country’s wealth, so as to arrest the American decline that is a major theme of international affairs discourse, usually accompanied by the corollary that power is shifting to the East, to China and (maybe) India,” he writes.
