Global Indifference
Pope Francis in his weekly address spoke of the 4 nuns killed in Yemen. In calling them "today's martyrs" he emphasized how they were not just victims of their attackers but by a "global system that is ignoring the violence of so many." Often when an act of violence is not directly upon us it can be easy not to be affected by it. It can seem like it is "not our problem."
Pope Francis calls us to see today how so many migrants and asylum seekers are suffering due to the global indifference that exists among many.
They seek refuge from unjust situations and so much violence and so often are unable to find acceptance due to the indifference of many. When we welcome these asylees we welcome God for we are all one and their needs are our needs and so beg our response. Let us and all our world learn to care deeply and not be described as a people of global indifference.
