Collembologist, talking about globular springtails: Yeah, see this? this is Sminthurinus. This over here? Sminthurus. Back over here? Sminthurides. What do you surmise about these?
Student: They're related genera?
Collembologist: NO!
Collembologist: They're actually as different taxonomically as a globular springtail can get!
Student: Hwat the fuck
Globular Springtail (Sminthurus mencenbergae), taken March 10, 2026, in Georgia, US
A tiny springtail perched on a dried grass stem! This genus prefers slightly drier environments than others in the area, being found more often in the open than under logs or rocks. With the near daily rain showers that have been happening, there's tons of this species and S. bivittatus all over rocks bordering mud puddles and wet leaves. They make for cute photos when I can get them in focus!
behold him. the glob ^
One of the springtails I've collected in Washington, it's nice to see they're still around but I'm not sure if they're breeding.
I like bugs :)
