          What’s Margarethe meant to do with this trash? She has any number of lovely flowering things in the Vault; she doesn’t need these crackling faded desert growths, browner than the dirt they came from. They’re too dead and useless even for the compost pile.

          Still…

          She hesitates over them. The weight of the flowers is so slight that her hand might as well be empty. They’re barely anything at all.

          Why not keep them? If they are barely anything. If they matter not at all.

          The Immortan is not home to notice them. Not home to mistake them for (and the idea is laughable, of course, of course) the token of another lover (as though she could have any lover but Him!). The other wives won’t care. They only have eyes for each other, not Margarethe. By the time Joe returns, the flowers may have crumbled naturally into dust, fragile as they are; Margarethe only has to let them alone long enough and they’ll destroy themselves for her, removing the evidence. Who will keeping them hurt?

          In a small drawer where she hides her own things–seeds she brought from the camp of her last owner, a few of the ancient books she has hoarded from Giddy’s collection, jewellike trinkets from the Immortan–she lays the ugly little bouquet down. Only she need know that they’re there. They’ll be her own secret… Margarethe smiles to herself. And her admirer’s, too.
