It was quiet in the little house on the hill in Hateno Village. Peaceful. Wonderful. Like a dream. And, truth be told, Zelda's heart selfishly clung to each day in hopes that it would last for eternity.

Let each day begin with Link's soft humming as he cooked breakfast, whispered her heart. Let it end with conversations over dinner about freshly read books and neighbors and discoveries yet to be had.

"Link..."

As she stared into her reflection within a cup of hot tea, Zelda wished, desperately, that she could die within that dream, never to awaken from it.

She looked up.

"I think it is time that I leave."

Zelda was quiet as she watched his hands move, each motion translating into a letter, a word, a phrase—

When does a man become a monster? She had asked him.

When he is alone, Link had answered.

There were dark circles beneath Zelda’s eyes and they only seemed to deepen as she nodded. A thick notebook hung in her grip and, with a sigh, she sat beside Link on the soft spring grass.

“Impa warned me when I began translating these particular scrolls that I might become upset at what I discovered,” she admitted, looking down at the notebook with a tired, sad gaze before turning her attention back to Link. “I fear she was right…if my translations are correct—and I believe they are—the Kingdom of Hyrule has been hiding stains in its past. Horrible, and ignorant, and…oh, Link.”

Another sigh. Zelda dipped her head and pulled at the mused strands of her golden hair. She stayed like that for a breath before turning her head just enough to see a familiar pair of calloused hands.

“I do not know what to think of it all. I had no illusion that our Kingdom was infallible, but to this extent…I can hardly begin to tell it.”
