I've never seen anyone say anything negative about Zay when he was the so called "LM captain," during season 2. I don't remember if it was just the fandom exaggerating, but he did make comments about LM in front of Riley during creativity and I personally thought this was a bit rude considering he knew about RL's unofficial thing.

Are they saying negative things about him now?

He was fairly blatant around that time frame.  Personally I think it was just the writers trying to shoehorn some evidence for their “triangle” in to make it so some people would be in suspense and think their might be a choice for Lucas to make between the two girls despite all previous evidence to the contrary,; other than his mall bit with Vanessa in the Texas Arc, Zay spent most of his visits in season two being little more than a plot device/comedic relief. I’ve also seen a few convincing fanon theories that explain his actions in a decent way.
