there’s this specific idea for a queer retelling of antigone that has been on my mind for months. eteocles as a repressed gay man, polynices as a trans woman; a fight and a double-murder in the only gay club of the city. transmasc butch antigone looking more and more like pre-transition polynices everyday, like they’re trying to become their sister. lesbian ismene wanting to protect her community by finding safety in mutual care rather than risking to face harm through violent protest. closeted transfemme haemon torn between her father and her lover. a suffocating atmosphere of homophobia and transphobia during an unstable period of elections, the family’s secrets shared to all just years after their parents were involved in similar scandal. tiresias as an anonymous account posting online about things no one is supposed to know. the chorus as the journalists and/or the people feeding on information through newspapers and social media

i’m trying to understand how exactly i come to consider a character as trans and why some rather than others.. sometimes it’s just revealed to me in a dream (transfem polynices) but sometimes it’s about gender transgression (orestes…). but when it’s about gender transgression why is it only some transgressive characters and not others? why do i read elektra as transmasc and not klytemnestra? why transfem orestes but not paris? <- i just realized in both of these examples the trans character is one who seems to repress this gender transgression / to be ashamed while the character i don’t necessarily read as trans is more secure in their gender non-conformity. but i think that’s just a coincidence (eg. antigone does affirm herself as gnc and i read her as transmasc sometimes). anyway. i don’t know but it’s interesting
