I like a good fandom AU as much as the next guy but I find a particularly hilarious incongruity in 7th Division AUs. I think it's just that the particular flavor of everyone in the 7th is so reliant on the setting and circumstances that removing those leaves you with... what, exactly? Like, here's a faction of characters whose entire uniting principle is that they've all been groomed into an imperialist military cult of masculinity... but let's put them all in a modern high school for fun. Tsukishima is a cheerleader now.

#even the humble fem AU.... like I Get It. I also like seeing the insane yaoi dynamics inverted into insane yuri. I like seeing them butch.#but you can't think about it too hard or it stops making sense.#perhaps fem!tsurumi does still have a crazy cult of freaks (women ed.) but it would have to be built from different first principles.#an interesting thought experiment to explore...#tbh any AU could probably be justified if you thought about it hard enough but it takes a *lot* more work to do that with the 7th than most #gk #gnnoying

Finally started watching the WondLa show. It is. Hm.

#skydance took one of the most evocative and visually striking pieces of children's literature of the 21st century-#-and sanded down all the edges until it was a perfect sphere.#wondla #gnnoying #like it's not BAD bad but it has none of the verve of the original #the tone is too light. the characters are weirdly flat. the symbolism is somehow both neutered and hamfisted.#why does nature feature so little when that's a core theme of the series?#why does the freaking WONDLA feature so little when it's THE TITLE OF THE SHOW???#and the ART DIRECTION. the books are ILLUSTRATED SO FUCKING WELL and somehow the art direction takes ZERO CUES FROM THEM #WHAT IS THAT PALETTE. WHAT ARE THE CHARACTER DESIGNS. WHY ARE ALL THE HUMAN ARTIFACTS BORING. THE PALETTE.#AAAAAAAAAAA
