GO Lawrence - Bailey's Week 3 Update!

For week 3 our team headed to Lawrence in the morning and began exploring the city. We began by walking to the arts center right by our building and met a wonderful woman who directs the art gallery. She invited us to her upcoming show, and spoke highly of the community of Lawrence and how everyone works together to accomplish the things that their city can benefit from. Talking to her really validated our presence in Lawrence, and made me excited to begin our community work. We continued exploring and saw several outdoor art installations that spoke to the diverse cultural embrace meant within the city. We walked around antique shops and then ended our exploration with a delicious lunch at a Dominican cafe.

For the second half of the day we worked with fabricator Jay Cadwallader on laser scanning the entire space. It was a fun experience- we learned about the process of laser scanning and even got to operate it ourselves. Afterwards, Manola, Beth, Jay and I all went to the local brewery and enjoyed a beer together. It was such a beautiful day!

Bittersweet last days of GO Fall 23

The session for GO Fall 2023 has come to an end. We finished with an amazing open house/celebration with fun activities, trivia (and prizes), music, and a toast to all the hard work and dedication everyone has put into this session. It was another incredible journey with lovely, talented, determined individuals. Thank YOU GO Fellows, for making this experience unforgettable! Until next time...

Why digital twins are critical to the metaverse and the AEC industry.

Digital twins are BIM model replicas of items in the physical world. The models are then uploaded into the metaverse and synchronized to their physical counterparts through sensors and loT connectors to create real-time digital twins. Suppose there is a change to the physical element, the digital twin updates in real time. The digital twin is the building block of the metaverse. With digital twins, cities can create roads, rails, and infrastructures for analysis; companies can produce working environments for their employees. Commerce can create stores to create a customer shopping experience; institutions can host lectures, classes, and office hours. The digital twin will also allow simulations and training opportunities to consider predictions for life safety in failed infrastructure or weather-related climate events. In addition, digital twins will profoundly affect the AEC industry. The metaverse and digital twins will allow projects to be accessible by the entire team virtually. Every team member will meet in the metaverse for walk-throughs and can interact with the design. Greg Demchak, Senior Director, Digital Innovation Lab, Bentley Systems, explains that "this simulation will allow for a one-to-one sense of the actual scale of a 3D model." The benefits of this simulation will lead to better outcomes for health and safety, along with more efficient coordination, procedures, scheduling, and client expectations.

People are looking to digital twins with excitement and anticipation because of their impact on how we predict and maintain our environments, buildings, and roadway infrastructure, along with health, and life safety.

I have many, many sketchbooks! At the beginning of each semester i get a new sketchbook for notes and design development. Like many of us, I am a very visual learner so writing and drawing things is a very important part of my learning process. Unfortunately having so many sketchbooks can make it hard to stay organized and a bit confusing when I want to go back and reference something. But, i enjoy the process of drawing and writing so much that this is not a deterent. Also lately I have started to incorporate digital sketching on my ipad and i find this to very usefull for my studio classes.

Staying organized? I like to use block timing to help stay organized and focused. At the beginning of every semester I find my families rhythm and I fill in my school, work and personal time around that. I make sure I know the rhythm for the day and also the week, both very important for me. Block timing helps me with decision fatigue, anxiety over deadlines, feeling spread to thin and jumping around from task to task, which can be exhausting! I find that I can get done what needs to be done in the allotted time, which helps me to not dedicate too much time to one task.

Superpower - Nour

I think that one of my most important skills is working on the smallest details regardless of the project. I always look forward to presenting all my skills and abilities in any project I work on. I think this skill is very important to achieve the goal of any project in the best way! 😄

GO Lawrence - Last day

Last day at the Lawrence office was bittersweet. We got a crash course on using saws to cut the old wood floors and patched up some areas with new floors. As daylight quickly came to an end, we cleaned up the space and locked up. Now it's set for next semester's fellows!

The past ten weeks of Gateway was so great and something every design student should experience when the chance comes. I learned so much about the beautiful city of Lawrence, the history, the people, the culture and most importantly, the strong sense of community...until next time, Lawrence!
