As the sun rises on the horizon, he sets his steed to a gallop and let’s go of his worldly concerns, his sword and money, which rapidly fall by the wayside, and the world rushes past him in a blur: the only thing clear is that distant point he is trying to reach, and the inner voice urging him onwards:

          The English playwright and poet William Shakespeare completes the title page for his newly written play, Romeo and Juliet. As the last letter is completed, his imagination wanders off into new realms, and the light of Aphrodite – Greek Goddess of love and passion – shines down upon him. Dreamy Shakespeare is surrounded by bottles of wine and glasses, and at his feet a vase of roses has fallen and smashed, though he is so wrapped up in his reverie, that he does not notice. On the wall, the candle illuminates the dim room and is reflected by the mirror.

Bright sun blazes over the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan This is the city of the followers of Huitzilopochtli, were a magnificent golden temple (the Templo Mayor) stands above a colourful marketplace selling food, weapons and jewellery, where merchants and buyers go about their daily trading. The sun God Huitzilopochtli encouraged the founding of the city and the nurturing of its growth and trade: for all prosperous ventures need a strong foundation, and the wise Aztec God knew the perfect position for this.

9 of Cups ~ God Tarot.

The Laughing Buddha. Chinese.

          The jolly figure of the Laughing Buddha sits cross-legged with his face expressing glee and satisfaction. He wears beads of jade around his neck, golden hoops in his elongated ears, and his huge belly, full of food, protrudes out of his red robes. Around him are nine offering bowls filled with clear water, each bowl bearing a wish; happiness, prosperity, strength, friendship... Behind him two Imperial dragons playfully adorn the pink wall.

Ace of Swords ~ God Tarot.

Thoth. Egyptian.

          A quill pen pauses it’s writing over the papyrus to reveal three statements: Philo sofia, cogito ergo sum, and sapere aude , Ibis headed Egyptian God of writing and knowledge, Thoth, watches over this process, and in the foreground, a sharp sword hangs, it’s handle in the shape of the wings of a bird and its blade marked like a ruler. At the swords helped is a dispersive glass prism, which refracts the spectrum of colours contained within the single shaft of light that enters it. In the background, a carving of hieroglyphs, the Egyptian alphabet, that Thoth was credited with inventing, can be seen, bearing the inscription, “Look, their words are set in writing. Open the scrolls and recite.”

Magician ~ Creator Gods~ God Tarot.

 In this card we see a more abstract scene that does not relate to a single myth or God, but to many: Creator Gods and creation myths. A large part of the card is taken up by the white dove, or Holy Spirit, hovering over the dark waters, out of which rise newly formed mountains. From the Dove, three shafts of light, representing the Awen, descend over the waters of creation. Above it is a lightning bolt, the symbol for the descent of Spirit into Matter. At the top of the card is chaos, and from the chaos of colour and letters is formed one word in Greek: LOGOS.

Veles. Slavic.

          At the head of a laden feast table, Veles stands and offers his bounty to those who wish to partake of it. He wears his traditional ram horns and is cloaked in the skin of a bear. Behind him, the has ended and haystacks are piled around the land. As the vines grow steadily, and the cattle that Veles rules over watch the feast, to men make a trade and an oath, blessed by the outstretched hands of Veles.
