The journey back to his TARDIS and into his room aboard the ship felt long and lonely. The Doctor tried his best to avoid looking down at Michelle’s unconscious features, knowing that if he dared to look down, he’d just be reminded how all of this was his fault.
He didn’t save Jocelyn, he didn’t protect Michelle well enough, he just kept ruining her life more than he was saving it. Just that day, they saved the universe, but it was at a cost that even he didn’t know the full extent of. Even that wasn’t completely enough to make him feel any better about this situation.
Slowly, the Doctor pressed his face into his hand, giving a solemn sigh as he rubbed his eyes. How long had he even been sat here beside Michelle as she laid on his bed? He wasn’t even sure, even his internal body clock being thrown for a loop. All he knew was that he was tired, so very tired.
He hadn’t gotten a single wink of sleep ever since he’d left Jamie behind. There just hadn’t been a chance to sleep. And now as he was leaning back in his chair, he could feel the pull of slumber dragging him into its lazy embrace. He didn’t want to sleep, but it was irresistible.
Within seconds, his eyes shut and he was finally dozing, somewhere between sleep and wakefulness that was wearily welcome.
