Maria Hill remembers clearly the woman she'd been too late to save.

The translator's wife, heavily pregnant with their first child, and really a very nice person. She made them food sometimes, with what little they had. It was appreciated by the men in camp.

But translators lived a perilous existence, and were viewed by some as traitors. Unfortunately, the some that thought this were often armed, and had no hesitancy in going after the weak and defenseless to make their displeasure known.

They'd saved the child, barely, and gone through the red tape to get the man and infant asylum back home. But the woman was dead, and n apologies or visas could make up for the loss.

It was a lesson she'd learned and taken to heart. Her entire goal in life was to never be too late again. Unfortunately, sometimes it can't be helped, and not everyone can be saved.

That was a lesson she refused to learn, even if she tried to teach it to others. Such was the dichotomy of command; say one thing, believe another.
