I riot in the splendour of your body and find there, not drunkenness, but the peace of God.” - Godfrey to Monica Wilson, 1935
Godfrey committed suicide in 1944, distraught that his wartime service took him away from Monica. His last note to her read:
“Darling, Try and forgive me. My weakness has betrayed us both. You have done everything possible for me; waited for me, encouraged me, loved me truly; no one could have done more, few as much. It was the real thing our love, don't let my failure make you doubt that.”
