A glimpse of Norrland (Northern Sweden)...
Goeksegh is a perfect album to listen to if you're looking for a dose of inspiration. I remember when I first heard Daniel's Joik, I was in awe. Jon Henrik Fjällgren's video of ‘Jag är fri’ shows his life in the north as a reindeer herder. His story is incredible. He was adopted at a very young age from Colombia by a Sami family and was bullied throughout his childhood for looking different but now, he is representing the Sami people with his deep music.
“The Sami are the only indigenous people of Scandinavia recognized and protected under the international conventions of indigenous peoples, and are hence the northernmost indigenous people of Europe.” - Wikipedia
This type of singing or chanting is called Joiking/joik, folk music of the sami people. Joiking was condemned during some part of Nordic history during the Christianisation of Sápmi and found controversial due to its association with the Noaidi (Shamans).
Today, joiking can be viewed as a spiritual type of music. IMHO, I would say it’s a perfect lounge music. But I have always had a thing for folk music. I look forward to live performance of Jon Henrik Fjällgren someday.
