What are your thoughts on Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers in terms of Producer's Cut vs. Theatrical Cut? I have only seen the latter, and I've heard conflicting things about the former.
Everyone said for years and years and years that the Producer’s Cut was so much better. But now it’s out. And now that it’s out I think people’s opinions are wavering because they’re seeing it for the first time.
Even I have conflicting opinions about it. On the one hand, I love that the Producer’s Cut just embraces the weirdness. I love that they just fucking go for it. There are some really disturbing, incestuous stuff in there, and stuff that’s done (I think intentionally) to take away Michael’s scare factor. The Druid Cult angle is much heavier in the Producer’s Cut, it invades every scene and it makes Michael much more of a pawn and not even that much of a presence within the film itself.
What I’ve come to like about the theatrical cut, despite all of its problems, is that the cult turns out to be wrong in this version. Which is something that almost everyone overlooks. They think they have control over Michael Myers, they think he obeys them and they think they know what drives him and how he came to be, but then he kills them all–which they did not account for. It wasn’t part of the plan and that massacre scene is in there specifically to show that they don’t know what makes Michael tick anymore than anyone else does. They’re just conspiracy theorists. And that’s something I really appreciate and was definitely better for the franchise in the long run.
But maaan did the Producer’s Cut have a cool twist with Loomis at the end.
Either way, another thing that never gets talked about but is brought up several times in the bonus features of the amazing Blu-Ray collection is that neither version is the ideal version of the movie. There were sacrifices and cuts and all sorts of shit going on right from the very beginning. Neither cut of the film is really the movie they set out to make. So, people saying that the Producer’s Cut is the way the movie was truly meant to be seen… that’s not necessarily true. They’re different cuts, for sure, they’re almost entirely different movies. Very few scenes are the same from one to the other. But they each have their own strengths and weaknesses.
I don't really think Halloween has lost it's place as a classic. Perhaps some people are just too obsessed with blood and body counts as you said to really appreciate what the original really is. I love all the subtleness of it but I don't consider myself pretentious (love Army of Darkness). I've actually only seen the first two and the first remake but I can tell you from what I've seen of Ressurection it looks TERRIBLE, and I find it hard to believe that some geniunely like it over the others.
I’m not sure if they like it over all the others, they’re just trying to spread that I like it. Sadly, I’m not pulling these comments out of my ass. I’m seeing them more and more and it’s just… oy.
Not sure if you've been asked this already or if you've done these already (because for some reason I missed The Thing bio on my dash). I'm sure these were both obvious choices to do eventually, but could you do a bio for Jason Voorhees and/or Ash Williams?
Jason Voorhees I did, just search Jason Voorhees, Friday the 13th or brundle’s horror handbook on my blog. Ash I definitely want to do and am planning to do, but I’m thinking about maybe waiting to see if the TV series drops any new insight into his bio. I’ll probably break done and do one before that though, but I don’t want to have to edit it if there’s major stuff revealed in the show.
