A really interesting walk through some parts of the Chernobyl NPP. This was filmed just a couple of days ago, on the 29th anniversary of the accident and it helped me a bit with my endless quest for understanding. I’ve read a lot about the accident, and I remember, especially while reading The Truth About Chernobyl by Grigori Medvedev, that while it was an amazing, sobering depiction of the events, I always had a hard time picturing what some of the surroundings really looked like. This didn’t fill in all the gaps, but it did give me a solid idea about a few key ones. Ugh. It always gives me goosebumps seeing places where terrible history took place, and not in a good way, but in a train-wreck-can’t-look-away sort of way. This works, too, because while I’d like to visit Pripyat someday, this is probably about as close as I’d really, truly like to be to the plant itself: on the other side of a computer screen from it.
