The day before, a stranger claiming to be a fellow harvester had approached the blond with a proposal; the man's horse team had traversed across a thin part of the ice field and had broken through, taking a day of back-breaking labor with them. So now the stranger hoped to recover his losses by partnering up with a split of fifty-five-fourty-five since Kristoff had already gathered a large amount prior to the man's arrival. Although hesitant, the mountaineer's empathy got the best of him and agreed.

Now the camp was stripped bare, leaving only Kristoff with the clothes on his back and Sven, who was nose-to-the-ground, attempting to pick up the thief's trail. Suddenly, the rangifer's head popped up with his ears perked with alert. The youth noted his friend's body language and followed the deer's gaze, half-expecting to see the traitor still skulking about.
