A traditional French sandwich made with ham, Gruyre cheese, and a creamy bchamel sauce. It is baked until golden and crispy.
Ingredients: 4 slices of white bread. 4 slices of ham. 100g Gruyre cheese, grated. 2 tablespoons unsalted butter. 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour. 1 cup whole milk. 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg. Salt and pepper to taste.
Instructions: Preheat your oven to 400F 200C. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour to create a roux, cooking for about 1 minute. Gradually pour in the milk, whisking constantly until the mixture thickens. Remove from heat and stir in the nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Set aside. Place 2 slices of bread on a baking sheet. Top each slice with a slice of ham and a generous amount of grated Gruyre cheese. Place the remaining slices of bread on top to form sandwiches. Spread the prepared sauce evenly over the top of each sandwich. Sprinkle additional grated Gruyre cheese on top if desired. Bake in the preheated oven for about 10-12 minutes, or until the sandwiches are golden and crispy on top. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving. Cut each sandwich diagonally and serve warm.
