Christmas at Work

There had been something troubling Tubbs all day. It was the prospect of being alone for Christmas for the first time in her life. Gone were the days where she and her elder brother decorated the pine-trees with lights, tinsel, and ornaments. But Raphael wasn’t coming back- there was no car that could drive the distance between them. It was too long a road to travel to reach eternity. Santa no longer left gifts under the tree- not even a small one for being good all year. Even the lack of snow and frosted widows wore upon her usually cheerful soul.
This year, her tree was barren- a blank canvas waiting to be painted. Truthfully, she hadn’t the heart to decorate or even get into the spirit of Christmas in her down time. The laughing, joking, and singing of carols all died upon her lips the moment she walked through the door of the apartment. A twinge of pain came with every reminder that New York was 1,285.6 miles away.
Doleful hues of evergreen and coffee shift to fixate upon her boss. She’d practically do anything to avoid going home to an empty apartment even if it meant inventing work to do on top of her fairly heavy load.A weary smile appears upon her face when the dark-haired Lieutenant spoke of needing her to work the case and keep an eye on Lombard.
She rubs her fingers long wise across her lower-lip. ”Where would you like me to start with Lombard?” Her gaze travels to his empty desk.
