What Memorial Day looks like to me... I was half-watching the Indy pre-race and thought that group of soldiers coming onstage was the Color Guard but, too late, realized no one was carrying the flag, only weapons. Unprepared for it, I lost my breath and as the first shot fired, I was bawling. Tears fell through the 21-gun salute, and only got worse with the playing of TAPS. In those moments, my inner walls implode, the last 13 years disappear and I am overwhelmed by the memories of loss, his funeral, of how much I miss him. Deep breaths through “America the Beautiful” and back under control, I stand with my hand over my broken heart 💔 for the National Anthem. Every Memorial Day since he died... #memorialday #goldstarwidow #myhero #myhusband #militaryfuneral #taps #21gun #fallenhero #SFCBryantAHerlem https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx7xkmNB3_b/?igshid=1xqrybxpl9soe
