Repost from @sea_legacy Video by @Jim_Abernethy // Right now in South Florida, Goliath Groupers like my friend “Tiny” pictured here in this selfie, are gathering in large numbers to spawn. Goliath Groupers (Epinephelus itajara) are critically endangered worldwide by the IUCN. In the US, after relentless fishing and hunting of these large groupers, they were finally protected in 1990. They can grow to 800 lbs and 8 feet. Some scientists believe they may grow to 100 years old. Groupers feed primarily on crustaceans and slow moving fish. Estimates are that over 100 have died during the current red tide catastrophe. Encounters like this remind me of the value of the marine life we’re fighting to protect. I’m incredibly proud to be part of the SeaLegacy Collective, working to help global citizens and those in my home state of Florida learn about critical issues like the red tide and rally to vote for clean water and healthy oceans. Please sign and share the petition in my bio to help save this and many other animals! @jim_abernethy #RedTide #goliathgrouper #beautiful #goliathgrouperaggregation #epic #toxic18 #glyphosate (at Jim Abernethy's Scuba Adventures & Marine Life Art Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bntk-9pjc6K/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=db6hpiiuiwsu
