“We're not retreating, we're just advancing in a different direction." Ability: Emergency Exit (Switches out when it reaches 1/2 or less of its maximum HP) Nature: Adamant(+Atk, -Sp. Atk) Item: Choice Scarf/Leftovers Moves: First Impression (Evolve) Liquidation (Level 48) Leech Life (TM 28) Aqua Jet (Egg Move) EVs: 252 Def, 252 Atk, 4 Sp Def Most Pokemon get a few options for Abilities which opens up numerous set possibilities for them to use. Not Golisopod. Emergency Exit is the only Ability Golisopod has access too, so all sets should keep that in mind.
Liquidation is chosen over Waterfall due to its 5 base power lead over Waterfall and a chance to lower the Defense of the opposing Pokemon, allowing for a follow-up Aqua Jet.
Leech Life works fantastically for Golisopod as it’s a reliable way to get HP back regularly and get more use out of Emergency Exit.
The main choice you want to make is whether to run a Choice Scarf or Leftovers. The Choice Scarf will let Golisopod do formidable damage to anything not resisting it but Leftovers can help push Golisopod ’s HP back above 50% and subsequently allow Emergency Exit to be used again. If you want to run Leftovers consider maxing HP EVs to get the most HP recovery possible from the Leftovers.
Be careful running First Impression and Choice Scarf. If you estimate an attack incorrectly and don’t either KO your opponent or get forced to switch out due to Emergency Exit then Golisopod will be stuck on the battlefield locked into a move it can’t use since First Impression can only be used on the first turn a Pokemon enters the field. The Choice Scarf/First Impression works really well if Golisopod is on its last legs and likely getting knocked out anyway, but otherwise, Leftovers will be more reliable.
Like 90% of the 7th generation, Golisopod’s abysmal Speed stat makes it a decent option for a Trick Room team. Just remember to get its Speed IV as low as possible if you plan to run a Golisopod in this way. If you do, consider using Waterfall instead of Liquidation since Waterfall has a chance to flinch enemy Pokemon.
