ADAM’S UNBELIEVABLY EXCITING COUNTDOWN OF HIS FAVOURITE RECORDS OF 2014
8. Beach Slang - Who Would Ever Want Anything So Broken/Cheap Thrills on a Dead End Street
Maybe this is a cop-out, but it’s my list and I can do what I want. Beach Slang released two EPs this year that combine to make one fantastic glob of goo-core.
I’m sure you’re probably wondering what “goo-core” is. Basically, this record sounds a lot like a modern day spin on those first few Goo Goo Dolls records that sound a lot like Replacements rips. As a noted Goo Goo Dolls fan (who stuck with the band all the way through to Gutterflower), it’s nice to hear their influence making a mild impact on music in 2014.
These two EPs combine to deliver eight songs that are over way too quickly and showcase singer James Alex’s talents for weaving broad strokes with intimate details of lives wasted, and yet very well lived.
“It's Friday night and I'm in the basement screaming out my lungs with my best friends. I hope when I die, I feel this alive.” Alex sings on American Girls and French Kisses. Yeah, you can sign me up for this.
