I can’t believe School Spirits has a gay character with a bisexual boyfriend AND a trans nonbinary character AND is setting up a lesbian relationship. This is the kind of queer representation ive only ever seen in shows like Heartstopper so to see it in a supernatural show thats NOT just about being gay is incredible! Just the casual queer rep is something I am not used to seeing at all! I never expected it to include so many queer characters because im so used to there being the Token Gay Character and nothing else (even then we’re lucky to have even one gay character, especially one thats important to the narrative.)
But no, we get so much more than that and the queer characters are treated the same way the straight characters are and are given the same amount of character development and screentime. They aren’t treated as just ‘the gay one’ but are instead written as complex multifaceted characters who are also queer. Again, this is NOT a show dedicated to gay people like Heartstopper so to be happily surprised by good queer rep was so exciting for me. The natural inclusion of queer storylines is so authentic and true to real life.
I wish more people talked about this show because not only is it incredible queer representation, its ALSO a genuinely great show with such an interesting premise and plot line. This is everything I wanted from Stranger Things and more. I can’t reiterate enough how amazing this is to me, this is the kind of queer representation I hope to see more of in the future!
