Being LGBT+ isn't considered a mental illness anymore, and the scientific community is very clear about that. And, the first diagnostic criteria mentioned to recognize a mental illness is always: "x group of traits severely impacts the individual's life"... in which way could Whump meet this criteria? We describe it as something that we consume, create or think about when we are in a difficult emotional state, because It helps us dealing with that state! Many of us develop their artistic skills creating Whump, and we use it to relax and socialize!
We could argue that one's interest towards Whump increases in presence of trauma and mental illness, but that's irrelevant! Is Van Gogh's art a mental illness? Because a lot of his work are inspired by his emotional state: that's literally the meaning of art!
