5 Ways to Explain Your Idea to a Designer
We've all been there, sat in a chair in front of the designer you've been following online for months, with an idea you're sure your customers will love. You're really excited to see your idea come to life but when the designer turns their computer screen round, your idea now looks like a Picasso got into a brawl with Jackson Pollock.
Here are five quick tips to ensure your ideas don’t get lost in translation:
What do you care about? Tell them what your company values are and what you want to be known for. Ensure that you can share a few key words to show that.
These words are the foundations of business and have been repeated in classrooms across the country - know who you are marketing to and what you are selling to them. Not only will this help your designer but it will help you focus your business strategies and marketing campaigns.
3. What colours don’t you like?
Okay, so how about we get to know each other a little better, huh? Your designer should give you direction on colours based on your product and current design trends. Help them out and narrow down some colours you know you would love or hate. This means you can create a truly personal brand identity that speaks for you.
Creating a design brief should be easy. Include the general idea of what you want your logo to look like, your target audience and deadlines. Including your company's background story can also be useful. Keep your word count to a minimum and your language simple but feel free to have wacky, unique or even crazy ideas! We love that.
Before meeting with your designer take ten minutes out of your busy schedule to write down as many ideas as you can. This can help spark a discussion that will lead to an idea even better than you imagined. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Do I know my company values? (trust me they're important)
Do I know who I'm selling to?
What would I respond well to if I were the customer?
What do I envision for my company?
