just some quiet thoughts on supporting local in ottawa: one of the common reasons given for supporting local is an economic one- to keep money in the community, and all that jazz. this is valid for sure, but what i've been noticing from meeting and discovering all these artists and makers and creatives around ottawa is that supporting local is really personal. here it's truly about supporting each other's work and progress and getting excited about where each person is going with their talent. we're rooting for each other in this city, and that really is the best thing.
Being a born and bred Winnipegger, I am used to very tight knit, collaborative communities. After moving to Ottawa from Montreal last spring I wasn’t expecting to feel such a connection to the City but within a few months of living here I felt like I belonged. Ottawa’s burgeoning art community allows for individuals to have a big impact and to be able to play a large role in shaping it. Being smaller than cities like Toronto and Montreal also has its perks because it’s easier to bump into people at shows, resulting in stronger relationships and opportunities for collaboration. In a larger city there are often endless openings you can attend every night of the week. This can take a toll on studio time so it’s nice to be in a quieter city where you can buckle down with less distractions.

Re-sharing some amaaaazing news from local designer Jasmine Virani, whose hand-made jewellery has been featured in friggin' Vogue magazine's February issue (!!!) So psyched for Jasmine's success. Big things can come from little Ottawa! Jasmine's Westboro studio/ shop is currently closed for renovations, but should be opening in the next couple weeks. For now, be sure to check her work out at www.jasminevirani.com
I think there's a lot of grassroots events in Ottawa, creative folks getting together with little agenda but to share and create.

A little something special from my first home in Ottawa: the Carleton University School of Architecture. Props to the video's creator Nam Hoang
