My homegirl/coworker had brought this deck to work today. She handed it to me since I've mentioned how I've seen it around on IG from other tarot diviners I follow, and even though it wasn't in my line of thought, she insisted I borrowed it to get a feel for it. Honestly, I REALLY love this deck! Learning about the various images of African deities mixed with historical African American figures gave so much life to the cards. Not to mention, for those figures I didn't exactly know on my own, it was a pleasure enlightening myself about them through further research (so far, my favorite folklore I've learned about was Kalemeleme and the python). I also did a couple of readings to see how I connected with the deck, and the messages came about much clearer supported by the mythologies depicted. Shout out to Karen (I have her on IG, but not here), she's a real one! I'll definitely be getting this deck for myself in the near future 😁
So as mentioned in a prior post, my coworker/friend lent me this African American Tarot deck so I could get a feel of the cards before making an official purchase. I decided to do a self-reading using my original Phoenix Spread. Although personal, I feel this reading is definitely good for anyone who’s looking for an overall change of pace in their lives.
1: Nest (How you feel about the current situation) - Death in this position calls for a need of transformation. I'm at a place in my life where I would love to progress in terms of employment and finances. Although I'm content with the job I currently hold, I have the desire to reinvent myself, keeping an open mind about new opportunities as well as revisiting old projects I can improve on.
2: Fire (What you need to leave in the past/get rid of) - Despite my willingness to revamp and reinvent myself, in this position the Hermit points out I can't completely do things on my own. I have to get rid of the notion of feeling as if I don't need help. In order for me to move forward and progress in my goals, it's ok to have ideas, but also it's definitely ok to receive a helping hand along the way.
3: Ashes (What you need to meditate/focus on) - The Tower points out that I need to meditate on old habits I need to change, and which things worked for me. I must challenge myself to weave through the clutter in order to remain focused on building my finances, as well as coming back with fresh eyes to improve on projects already set in motion. I must also be able to focus on how to handle rapid changes that may occur at some point. Challenges are inevitable, but the Tower allows me to reflect on how I go about facing the obstacles that may come.
4: Resurrection (What you will learn from the transformation) - In a literal sense, Judgement points out once the changes within myself have been made, I would be able to exercise better judgment in reference to making decisions beneficial to my savings and career goals. A reset button is never harmful; sometimes we feel we've failed if things don't go the way we planned them initially. What I will learn is by asking for assistance where needed, paying attention to potential obstacles, and carefully planning and taking action, I will be able to reap my rewards in due time. Success will come about if I do things differently this time around. All it takes is patience and hard work.

So backstory before I get into this reading...I'll make it very SparkNotes: Met a guy a few weeks ago. Seems like a cool guy from conversations we've had, hung out a couple of times...but something is off. Granted, I shouldn't jump to conclusions, but I can't help but feel there's something not clean in the buttermilk. So why not get some advice from an outside source, no? I did a simple Yes/No spread, and clearly the cards gave 'No' as a response. It's not just the 'No' response that grabbed my attention, but the cards associated. The High Priestess further signifies my gut instinct; it's not something that's obvious which is making me weary, it's something dealing more with my intuition I can't ignore even if I want to. I always take the Empress as a card in relation to being nurturing in any aspect, and the fact it's reversed personified a lack of substance within this potential romance. So far, the attraction is one of face value, but on a deeper, emotional level there's something missing. Given the person's cynical nature based on his past encounters with men, it could be something hard to break out of, which is understandable. On the other hand, you can't build a nurturing relationship without a certain level of trust no matter what you've been through. Overall, the Eight of Wands best advises to pump the breaks for a bit. Even though things are fresh and we're taking things slow, instead of forcing it, it's best to listen to my gut feeling as the High Priestess signals. Being aware of initial signs of jaded vision and mistrust, until that barrier is let down (if it's ever let down), then romance will have to sit on the shelf for a minute. I'm never in a rush for love, but this time seemed promising...until I picked up a vibe...and my vibe is never wrong. Haven't read my cards in awhile, but clearly there's no disconnect. It's always important when it comes to dating and courting to always follow your intuition over anything! That includes the good vibes 🤗
It’s been awhile since I did a reading…like, a full on, more than one card reading. I needed a little bit of advice on a friendship and of course my cards had no problem holding back the truth. To be completely transparent, this person was a friend who I ended up dating a long time ago, and we’ve remained friends due to the foundation we’ve built.
The Ten of Swords pointed out the few (there weren’t many to be completely honest) downfalls this individual and I have had. Although a good person, there were a number of times where he and I didn’t see eye to eye. Communication in some aspects were lacking, and although we had things in common, there were other differences on how we viewed things which caused debates. There’s also a level of overthinking and mental baggage this card points out, which in essence, I do have a tendency to overthink certain situations when it could completely be simple.
The Death card in reverse is precisely how I feel and have felt for a long time: the ties between this friend and I are hard to let go. We’ve been through the worst situations; however, as we’ve grown over the years, through communication and a level of forgiveness on both parts we’ve been able to maintain our friendship…literally for better or worse. Even when we’ve given each other space, it didn’t take long for one of us to reach out to each other in order to talk things out.
Overall, the advice I’m taking from the Ace of Pentacles is to remain firm in our connection and take things for face value. The individual and I do make a good pair in terms of companionship, and if I don’t overthink situations or complicate our current relationship with the past, then there will be room for prosperity and an even stronger bond than we already have. Bringing it back to the Death card, this is a friendship I already knew was going to last the tests of time. Because we have the ability to reset when we need to, it allows us to step away from situations with a clear mind and come back with a little more clarity to move forward.
For anyone else out there who may be going through a similar situation, even if you didn’t date the person, just remember communication is ALWAYS key. Use the past as a tool not to condemn a person, but a tool to learn about the people you deal with and how to go about navigating the relationships. Don’t overthink your instincts as well; let the answers come to you freely without too much clouded judgement. It can really make or break friendships.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!!! Each year I get older, but I always remain young at heart! So blessed to be able to wake up and see another day, another month, another year. All I want for this year is continued growth and to bring things full circle within my life. Here's to 27!!! 🎉🎊🎈🎂🤘🏽
The first message of 2017 can be summarized in one word: Strength. 2016 has proven to be a very trial and tribulation year for most; however, 2017 brings forth a new beginning and a new outlook. From all of the failures experienced in the past year, we learn the many things we've feared or the things that overwhelmed us can be conquered with an equal amount of patience and diligence. Take this year to strengthen bonds that may have loosened, accept challenges and opportunities you may usually see as difficult, and open your mind to new ideas that can change the world around you. YOU HAVE THE POWER! Become aware of the power and strength you possess, and 2017 will surely bring about results ✊🏽
