now that google has an AI overview for most web searches that needlessly harms the environment, i've switched to using startpage.com as my search engine. it's based on google but simpler, and very privacy oriented. one can get an addon for Firefox that inserts it as default, and i see there is also a mobile app.

edit: i have been informed that duckduckgo may also be a decent alternative, tho one has to manually turn AI assist off. it is also integrated into Firefox without the need for addon.

It will still take you to google and land you in an original tab without wasting 5 times the amount of energy an ai search would take.

Do you guys (gender-neutral) know of a good alternative to Google Docs? I've been using it for years and I want to move my writing off of it. Because Google is planning to start this, and I don't want that to happen to my writing. Even if it's in a really rough state.

I should also explain my current writing system (as of August 2023). This is extremely simplified by the way, also there is some overlap between different programs/apps.

~My current writing system~

Google Docs: Online backup of drafts, random lore tidbits, practice drafts, chapter outlines, story arc outlines, character sheets, basic worldbuilding, etc. The bulk of my writing stuff happens here.

LibreOffice: Everything that Google Docs does but offline

Pluot: Lore, detailed worldbuilding, character sheets, story arc outlines, chapter outlines

Notion: Visualizing timelines, compiling everything into a "wiki"

Also, just to let you know, I'm on a pretty strict budget. So I can't afford the super-expensive programs or subscription services. I'd prefer to use something that's free, or super cheap.

Every single search engine I've tried are as shitty as Google new algorithm. I cannot find what I'm searching for ever. Anyone has a recommendation? I've tried ecosia and duckduckgo and they give exactly the same shit as google

I keep seeing posts about how shitty google is and no recommendations for alternatives so heres one ive been using!

Its called Ecosia and your searches help plant trees and reduce carbon emissions! I think its like every 45 searches = 1 tree planted.

Anyone has a Google alternative to mobile circle to search, I use it mainly to copy words in apps that don't allow me to copy select words/sentences.
