X Degrees of Separation, Mario Klingemann
“ They say any two people in the world can be connected through friends of friends, just in a few steps. How about artworks? Haenyeo
The Haenyeo are a group of all-women divers from the North Pacific Island of Jeju, a self-governing province of South Korea. The first record of the people of Jeju diving dates back to 434 A.D, when it was an exclusively male profession, and women divers aren’t mentioned in literature until the 17th century. For unclear reasons, by the 18th century it had become a female dominated industry, leading to the women of Jeju to become the primary bread-winner in many families. With the haenyeo contributing to a substantial amount of Jeju’s economy, a semi-matriarchal society has emerged.
