Are we getting a salvaged reunion?
When they arrive at Ego Inc. Ollie is in the lobby at the front desk making paper stars and hanging them with fishing wire off of Hopeful’s branches. He looks up to see Google Black walk in with several injured Google androids in tow, and without hesitation, Ollie goes to hit the panic button. But someone holds back his hand.
“Careful, bud, don’t want to cause mass hysteria.”
“Anti!” Ollie throws his arms around the glitch’s neck. “You disappeared, and I was worried. Also you took Black?” He looks over his friend’s shoulder to the android across the desk. “Why?”
“He wanted to make up for some things.” Anti glitches to sit cross-legged on the desk. “So we freed all the Google units that Actor had locked away!” He gestures behind him. “And these guys are the family of the Googles who have been living at the manor, the Salvaged ones.”
Ollie’s eyes widen as he looks around now at the others. “Oh! Oh...” He steps around the desk, and they seem curious. After all, they don’t see many Yellow units anymore. “Come right this way! I can take you to them!”
They all head for the elevator except for Black. Anti turns, a smile on his face. “Come on, you don’t want to see the reunion?”
Black gives his head a single shake. “I don’t think... it would be appropriate.”
Anti nods. “Ok, sure. Well, why don’t you wait right here? And I’ll be back in a bit, okay?”
“Sure.” Black takes a seat, and Anti glitches into Ollie’s core to tag along.
When they reach the Salvaged Googles’ rooms, the others huddle together. Ollie knocks. “Crater? Caleb? Gemini? There’s someone here I think you might want to see.”
The door opens. Crater is standing there, and he’s tackled quite suddenly by the Green who was asking for him. The Red’s eyes go wide as he stumbles back under the weight of his brother, and after a moment, as if he’s only slowly remembering how, he wraps his arms around them and squeezes. “Volts, I... I never thought I’d see you again! You’re alive?”
“Gemini?” The Blue and Red push into the room, and the twins look up from where they were sitting playing cards with Caleb. Their faces light up like Christmas, and they jump up, holding hands, and double bear-hug their brothers.
Caleb stands and looks around. Then down at his feet. There’s no one here for him, just as he feared. He feels a hand on his arm and looks up. Ollie gives him a sad smile. “They wouldn’t let me see them, no matter what. I knew they were gone, but I didn’t want to admit it to myself. Now I know for sure.” He places his hand over Ollie’s. “Don’t worry, though. I’ll be okay.”
“Um, Mr. Caleb?” Crater brings his brother over, a bright red blush in his cheeks. “This is my brother, Volts. Volts, this is Caleb. He helped us escape.”
Volts offers his hand, and the two androids shake. And then Gemini and their brothers come over. “Excuse me but,” the Blue with Gemini asks, “they were wondering if you had a unit of your own still.”
Caleb shakes his head. “I’m afraid I’m the last left.”
“Come with us,” one of the Gemini’s whispers. “We could be...”
“A family,” the other finishes. “Together.” He looks at Crater. “All of us?”
Ollie grins and bounces a little. “I think that’s a fantastic idea! And you can all stay here! It’ll be great!”
But the Googles all look around at each other, and Crater shakes his head. “We appreciate it, Ollie. Really. You have been so kind to us when we needed you most, but it’s time that we move on now.”
Gemini takes one of Ollie’s hands and smiles. “We’ll keep in touch.” “Yeah, we promise.”
Ollie nods and looks towards Caleb. “I expect frequent emails, okay? To let me know you’re safe. And to talk about those questions I had. You will, won’t you?”
Caleb ruffles Ollie’s hair. “You have my word, little one.”
Ollie follows them down to the lobby to see them off, and once they’re gone, Anti reappears at his side. “That was a really brave and stupid thing you did,” Ollie tells him. “But I’m proud of you.”
Anti beams with satisfaction. “Yeah! We make quite the team, don’t we? Black? Black?” He looks around, but the android is gone.
