RMZ-006 Gorgodos
It’s another dinosaur! Believe you me, before this is done we’ll be sick of dinos (almost as much as we’ll be sick of ligers) but for now, I’m happy to see this guy. Gorgodos is a stegosaurus-type and much more sensibly named Stegazoid in it’s European release. The design was unchanged there. Gorgodos uses the same basic frame as Elephantus before it and while it works overall, I think there’s a little bit of weirdness to the design because of it. In particular, the legs connect really high on the body for a segosaurus and the front shoulders have a sort of pauldron that was used to move the ears on Elephantus but has no use in this design.
Gorgodos does have a few unique design elements, the most obvious being the plates along the spine, which honestly is the only thing that really makes it look like a stegosaurus, other than the overall shape, considering it lacks the tail spikes. A recurring idea in zoids is that plates or fins along a zoid’s spine are used for electromagnetic warfare; Gorgodos is no different, being the first zoid deployed to have radar and radar jamming equipment.
It’s a really nice zoid too. While the main body is a little weird for a stegosaurus, it’s not very noticeable and the overall effect is very nice with its cute spines. Gorgodos is armed similarly to other zoids so far in the line, with two beam cannons on the sides of the cockpit and missile pods on either side of the body. Even so, I can easily see this zoid in a support role, backing up frontline models like Elephantus and Garius. Like every terrestrial zoid covered so far, the color scheme is a little bland though it communicates the idea of a hero zoid well enough.
I like how so early in the series they’re already establishing the zoids in different roles. Gorgodos’ role would quickly be taken up by far larger and more powerful zoids later in the series, but I really like what they’ve done here. Probably the best of the early quadruped zoids. 4/5
