Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - Spanish Dance Troupe (1999, V0, Mantra)

Not their most acclaimed album, but definitely the most psychedelic and folky. Terrible, terrible band name, but nice tunes, and there's traditional folk and even country influences on the album. Sweet, goes down easy, good in any mood. Melodies impeccable, love songs on point. Definitely a bit of a Robyn Hitchcock influence here, whether from the Soft Boys or his solo albums.

Gorky's Zygotic Mynci: "Stood On Gold"

I'm going to follow Witzie's Jonny post with a sweet, sweet classic from Gorky's. Of the three big Welsh bands of the 90s (Manics, Furries and Gorky's) they were my favorite. SFA were probably a better band, and Manics were definitely a more popular band, but there was just a certain something I related to with Euros Child's very British brand of folksy-psychedelica. (I'm also a big fan of Fairport Convention, Pentagram, Sandy Denny, etc, so there's that....)

By the end of their career, they were making softer, less weird, more melodic music, and their 2001 penultimate album (released a week after Sept 11) was like a healing balm for me in those shitty shitty days after the attack. This song in particular stayed on repeat on my Discman and I must have listened to it a thousand times that autumn.....(mize)
