One of the things about Randyll Tarly banning Sam from becoming a maester is it's about personal pride, not saving face. It would have been a bit unusual but nothing shameful. There are Tyrells at the citadel after all. It certainly wouldn't have been more scandalous than an eldest son that everyone knows is no warrior joining the Night's Watch or going out hunting with his father and having a little "accident".
What is ASOIAF Rarepair Swap?
ASOIAF Rarepair Swap is a monthly fanworks exchange for both the A Song Of Ice And Fire book series and the Game Of Thrones show. As well as the Dunk and Egg novellas and pre-asoiaf.

How does it work?

In Winds and Dream, what sort of personality, motives and end fate do you think we can expect from the (probable) future Grand Maester, Gormon Tyrell?
Maester Gormon (Tyrell) is basically a blank slate at this point. However, given what is likely to go down in King's Landing at some point in TWOW, I expect he's not going to live very long. If he's lucky, he and the Tyrell regime as a whole will figure out a way to neutralize the Sparrows, but it's likely to be a short-term solution that (literally) goes down in flames when Daenerys arrives.
