Way Out West round-up: day three
The festival came to a close yesterday with a little rain, a little thunder, and a lot of great music.
The final day of the festival fell on another overcast day, but a particularly eclectic line up ensured it was more than a little colourful in its variety. Making The Knife look as ordinary as a James Blunt tribute band, Goat brought a new kind of infectious mayhem to Swedish music. The Gothenburg based experimental rockers are notorious for their many world music influences, and released an awesome debut album last year appropriately titled, “World Music”. If the masks, outfits and manic dancing aren’t peculiar enough for the average festivalgoer, the general secretiveness and occasional occult reference certainly make them an act to try and keep your eyes on. Dashing across to the Azalea side of the park saw Cat Power, aka Chan Marshall, bring a wonderful sincerity to her set, with a mixture of melodic tales from her uneasy past, and the hopeful songs of her recent release. It was rare to see an artist exhibit so much tenderness and affection to the crowd without it seeming contrived, “I love you more!” she told the audience as they applauded at the end of one track, “I love everyone, it’s my weakness”. A fantastic set was rounded off by excellent city name-dropping “Ruin”, before Ms Power distributed flowers to each member of her band and crew, with the last precious few reserved for the grateful audience...
