Way Out West round-up: day three

The festival came to a close yesterday with a little rain, a little thunder, and a lot of great music.

The final day of the festival fell on another overcast day, but a particularly eclectic line up ensured it was more than a little colourful in its variety. Making The Knife look as ordinary as a James Blunt tribute band, Goat brought a new kind of infectious mayhem to Swedish music. The Gothenburg based experimental rockers are notorious for their many world music influences, and released an awesome debut album last year appropriately titled, “World Music”. If the masks, outfits and manic dancing aren’t peculiar enough for the average festivalgoer, the general secretiveness and occasional occult reference certainly make them an act to try and keep your eyes on. Dashing across to the Azalea side of the park saw Cat Power, aka Chan Marshall, bring a wonderful sincerity to her set, with a mixture of melodic tales from her uneasy past, and the hopeful songs of her recent release. It was rare to see an artist exhibit so much tenderness and affection to the crowd without it seeming contrived, “I love you more!” she told the audience as they applauded at the end of one track, “I love everyone, it’s my weakness”. A fantastic set was rounded off by excellent city name-dropping “Ruin”, before Ms Power distributed flowers to each member of her band and crew, with the last precious few reserved for the grateful audience...

Way Out West round-up: day two

The festival basked in the Friday Sun before a neon night show from headliners The Knife, as the first full day kicked off the festival in earnest.

It’s not just Slottsskogen that is enjoying playing host to Way Out West; as well as the many Stay Out West club shows in the early hours of each morning, there are a series of quality films being shown across the city, with several Swedish premieres on the schedule.

The fantastic Shane Meadows documentary The Stone Roses: Made Of Stone was an apt beginning to a day crammed full of musical promise. Juxtaposing the bands original growth into the biggest and most celebrated British band around, with their self-proclaimed “resurrection” after fifteen years of acrimonious separation, the film uses Meadows’ (This Is England) trademark nostalgic style to effectively tell the story of this immensely talented band. Seeing the smile on the band’s face as they dust off their old tracks in rehearsal for a series of huge shows is really what this business about: creativity, fun and solidarity.

Back on the Flamingo stage, Rodriguez, the focus of last year’s Academy Award winning documentary Searching for Sugar Man, completed his remarkable tale with another European festival appearance. His wonderful voice, delivering Dylan-esque poetry rapt within catchy folk ditties, evoked memories of a sixties summer that didn’t seem so far away in the warm Gothenburg sunshine...

Way Out West 2013 round-up: day one

Neil Young & Crazy Horse headline, but for the wrong reason on festival opening day. 

Way Out West Festival goers were left disappointed last night, after the headliners had to cancel their performance just a few hours before they were due on stage. The weather had already somewhat commandeered Gothenburg’s “summer festival”, with gloomy clouds and rain showers the trend throughout the whole day. But there was still a party atmosphere heading into the final few bands of Thursday.  However, what promised to be a spectacular evening was dulled somewhat just as Australian psychedelic rockers Tame Impala were due to take the Azalea stage. Festival officials came out and announced to the crowd that Neil Young & Crazy Horse weren’t able to play, and as a result the rest of the night’s schedule would be adjusted.... http://www.goteborgdaily.se/entertainment/way-out-west-round-up-day-one

The UEFA Women's EURO 2013: Sweden 1-1 Denmark

Gamla Ullevi 2013-07-10 A carnival atmosphere helped usher in the start of the UEFA Women’s European Championships in Gothenburg last night, where both city and stadium had basked in sun-kissed anticipation leading up to, and during the match. Both teams enjoyed chances to snatch the win from their Scandinavian neighbours, but a succession of excellent goalkeeping, particularly by Danish goalkeeper Stina Petersen who saved two penalties in the second half, kept the score at 1-1. The first half started frantically, as Sweden, cheered on by a sea of yellow and blue, created two fantastic early chances. Denmark settled into the match soon after, and began to look a threat whenever they came forward. Midway through the first half, with each team tentatively trading blows, Denmark took the lead. Goal feast as IFK beat Mjällby

IFK Göteborg went into Monday’s match knowing that a victory would leave them top of the Allsvenskan, and though they got the result they wanted in the end, it wasn’t without its scares. MAIF broke the deadlock in the 10th minute with the first real chance of the match. A jinking run down the right from Haris Radetinac brought him to the byline, and just as the IFK defence looked to have it under control, he cut it back to Kristian Hayes. His shot looped over John Alvbåge and into the IFK goal via a deflection. Referee Johan Hamlin turned down a couple of appeals for penalties for challenges on IFK midfielder Philip Haglund, as the home team pushed for an immediate equaliser that was not forthcoming....

IFK draw at home to Djurgården

  IFK Göteborg failed to deliver the three points in a scrappy evening match at Gamla Ullevi. Anyone who saw the Svenska Cupen final between these two teams may have expected a goal feast that never came close to arriving on Monday night. Djurgården, perhaps still smarting from the 4-2 loss on penalties at the Friends Arena just a few weeks ago, edged the early stages of the match, with the first shot of note coming in the 9th minute, a Martin Broberg shot that curled narrowly wide. IFK had to wait until the 11th minute for their first chance, when Robin Söder fired wide after good work from Captain Tobias Hysén. The Djurgården foothold grew steadily stronger throughout the first quarter of the match, with midfielder Daniel Amartey impressively seizing control of the game from the centre of the pitch. The match began to settle into the disjointed affair that would define it as both teams lacked quality in the final third. Goal attempts were restricted to long-range efforts, with another Söder shot nearly creeping in as IFK finally began to impose themselves on the game. Newly crowned IFK player of the month Sam Larsson was showing some good composure and ability on the ball down the left hand side, while Hysén was attempting to dictate play just off the front line....
