Gotham 5x11:

-Oswald gives a speech about following your heart, Ed says he’ll miss him but then proceeds to “follow his heart” (aka Oswald). Also, Ed is implied to have lied about needing two people to conduct the submarine, meaning he just wanted to ride with Oswald.

-Oswald sacrifices himself to protect Ed (and even calls him “Eddie” for extra points) and loses an eye but is not even concerned about it. He even says “it’s the least I could do” as if it was no big deal since he was able to save Ed’s life. Ed tends to him with a worried and guilty face after apologizing. He even tries to help him down the stairs and it’s implied to have tended to his wound.

-Oswald and Ed have a long speech about not caring about anyone but, when they are both about to betray each other, they melt into each other’s arms and can’t bring themselves to stab the other. They even hold on tighter to each other with Oswald tearing up and Ed frowning at the notion of stabbing him before letting go and agreeing to work as a team.

One thing I really loved about Nygmobblepot in 5x08 is how well it compliments and parallels their scenes in 5x05. 

In 5x05, it was very much Oswald-focused when it came to demonstrating his positive feelings and affection towards Ed. In 5x05:

Oswald used Strange to save Ed’s life

Oswald wanted to protect Ed

Oswald was worried for Ed

Oswald got choked up when he called Ed a “friend” (which he hadn’t said in a while)

Oswald mentioned Ed was his “only friend”

Oswald was the one to say “What was I supposed to do? Let you die?” and “because I needed you!!”

In 5x08, their relationship went deeper. It was more Ed-focused when it came to showing his positive feelings about Oswald. In 5x08:

Ed saved Oswald’s life

Ed tried to protect Oswald

Ed expressed emotion when Oswald said “Not a good friend”

Ed stated that they were “friends/friendship” (which he hasn’t said since season 3)

Ed brought up how they accepted one another for who they are

Ed gave a relieved/genuine smile at Oswald 

Ed assured Oswald as he mentioned that their relationship was “great” not long after Oswald had said he was a bad friend and that he was alone

Even though both episodes had great moments from both characters, I absolutely loved how well each episode portrayed their feelings for one another. While 5x05 re-established Oswald’s feelings, 5x08 developed their relationship further as Ed’s feelings strengthened and became more evident. They are both officially friends who save each other, laugh with each other, and care for each other again.
