So about #gothisnotkillstar
I realize that the #gothisnotkillstar debate is over, but I have something I wanna say.
I can’t speak for everyone, but in my irl-experience, building a goth wardrobe is about slow accumulation.
Usually, you get into goth when you’re in your teens. Teens usually don’t have a lot of money.
Back when I started getting into it, I had maybe two outfits that were kinda goth, and even then, they were my mom’s old cardigans and grey jeans. I wasn’t exactly pulling a BlackFriday.
I’m 27 right now, and back in school, so I can’t say that adding to my closet is my biggest priority at the moment.
Also, I don’t need to. Because back when I had money, I bought all the gothic goodies I could get my hands on! Right at this moment, I have shoes I haven’t even used yet! And yes, I have stuff from Killstar.
(I also have stuff from Alchemy Gothic and Stargazer, but no one seems too upset about those brands)
And I have hand-me-downs from friends and family that I have owned since I was 15. Because that’s how it works sometimes! You can’t throw all your colorful clothes away without having new ones to wear!
Anyone who expects you to emerge from your room, fully gothed up the week after you realized The Sisters of Mercy make you feel Like That, is delusional!
Killstar (and some youtubers) were taking heat for presenting the idea that you have to have this and this thing from the collection to be goth. I understand that some of you may have felt pressure to not show yourselves until you looked like a model from the site, or maybe gave up on the idea of changing your style entirely.
But Goth isn’t one brand. If you like what Killstar is producing, by all means, go ahead!
But this is bigger than an online store. This is you figuring yourself out!
It’s flirting with gothabilly one summer, and then realize that no, you’re actually more into deathrock. Or screw that, you actually wanna go for cyber-goth!
Personally, I’ve gone from emo to semi-victorian to what I now call retired-new-wave-bassist. And I’m not gonna lie to you. Having a lot of money to spend feels amazing. Being able to buy new shoes at any moment, or new bags you don’t really need is fun!
But if you’re broke or should spend your money on food or meds, you need to know that in the end, it shouldn’t matter if you’re decked out in Killstar or thrift shop clothes, or blue jeans! (fuck anyone who gives you grief for that, btw).
You found something that resounds with you and that’s awesome. Take your time and figure out what works for you!
