Writing Task

Death & Life:

Write about your characters first experience with death. Who died? When was it? What did your character know about death before the event and what did they come to learn about it after?

The first experience that Jon ever had with death was when he was just a young boy of four. He was out in the stables playing with Robb when they came across one of the older horses in the stable. She was a jet black mare that mothered Robb’s pony at the time. She was clearly ill so the boys ran to their father and they spent the night pampering the dying horse. Late that same night she ended up dying. Ned told the boys not to cry and that they would experience death many more times. 

The first person that Jon ever saw die was a man being executed for treason. It was only 2 years after the horse when Ned took him to see his first execution. The man was begging for mercy and didn’t stop until his head was on the stone. He didn’t look away as he watched his father make the cut, one swift movement and the man’s life was over. It was the first of many executions that Jon witnessed in his life. Now death followed him wherever he went.

a life of the spirit

Write about your characters spiritual upbringing. In which faith were they raised? How did this faith shape their early life? What values and sense or morality did it give you? Does your character still worship the same faith and why?

Sansa was raised in the North and was taught for a time in the ways of the old gods until it became clear she preferred the seven of her mother’s faith. This was one of the ways she grew on the similarities of her mother, she was always her mother’s daughter in a way she was never her father’s. It also lead to a feeling of being misplaced within Winterfell, a northern girl with southern tastes, and made her long to visit the south.

Sansa had always, like most noble girls, felt a deep connection to the Maiden. While she would never admit it, a vane part of Sansa had wished to be like the Maiden reborn, dreamed her future husband would be her Warrior, and that together they would be a paragon of virtue and beauty that all of Westeros would admire and envy.

This changed when she watched her father die on the steps of the Sept. Sansa could no longer enter a sept of the seven without thing of his murder. From then on she would visit the weirwood of the Red Keep, as a way to be closer to her father. She wanted to purge herself of the South and reline her true northern roots. Now that she has returned to Winterfell she is trying to learn and understand more about the faith of her father.
