Friday, March 23rd

Our Humpbacks are returning! We’re still seeing Gray Whales, but more and more Humpbacks are being sighted every day. Today we saw several groups of Humpback Whales surface lunge feeding, tail slapping, and playing with Giant Kelp.  We’re happy to see the hungry Humpbacks return, and we’re gearing up for the start of Killer Whale season here in Monterey Bay. Soon the mom and calf Gray Whales will be traveling through the area, which brings in Killer Whales from all along the coast. It’s like Killer Whale Thanksgiving! We’ll be running special All Day trips during this time, and our morning trips will increase to 4 hours to give us more time with the animals.  The sun is shining, the wind is light, and spring is truly on its way for Monterey Bay Whale Watch.

Friday, March 2nd

Today was one of those priceless experiences that whale watchers are always hoping for.  The swells were tall, which made leaving the bay tricky. Fortunately, we knew there were Humpback Whales in the middle of the bay, so we headed out there. Once we got to the area where we knew whales had been sighted, the captain spotted splashing. We got closer and realized those splashes were a Humpback Whale slapping its pectoral fin on the water! The captain stopped the boat and we spent the next 45 minutes watching the show.  There were actually 3 whales in the area, and as we stood there in awe, they breached, pec slapped, and tail slapped over and over. They even came close to the boat to breach a few times! 

It was an unforgettable experience. Sadly we couldn’t stay forever, so we headed back for the dock. Rain clouds chased us back to shore, but the downpour held off until we were back at the Wharf.
