Here is the glow Chasing the goal I'm trouble, you know You find us where we fall We're chasing shadows
It was done. She leaned back, eyes settled on the desk before her, almost completely alone for once in the new, massive office. Manager of The Golden Sun. Responsible for influx of funds. Files upon files of upkeep needed. Then there was... she brushed it from her mind. Now was not the time to worry about that. Now, she had other things at hand. Namely the sound of Ham hitting blocks together on the rug, right in the middle of the huge place. Really, why did the office need to be this large?
Mmmn. Her thoughts grew idle once the drama, the chaos had been lost. Once she was able to just go someplace else for a short time. Eyes drifted over the expansive wood top, catching sight of something she’d brought from the lab. Grunting, she slowly sat up, reaching out to retrieve the object of her eye, turning the the glow stick necklace in her hand. It was long dead by now, but a flicker of memory came bursting out in full color.
His arm about her neck, hugging her, laughter so loud in her ear she swore she’d go deaf. Someone had said a joke, she couldn’t remember who - everything was funny now. Pulsing, overwhelming music that warped her sense of being, sense of self. Her lungs ached, chest hurt from how much she cackled, body shaking hard against the norn beside her. He smelt of sweat and a dozen perfumes and gunsmoke. Or did she? The scents mixed into one confusing abysmal potpourri. She turned her eyes, looking upwards as a deep voice rumbled at her, arm jostling her again.
“The Aristocrats. He told you it?” Question, inquiry. She shook her head, not because he hadn’t, but because she wanted him to tell it again. Without provocation, he began to spill the crude tale of a family and their dog. Words became noise, and she just stared at the boyish manner in how he described something so vividly despicable. She laughed, not because of the joke, but because he was laughing.
Grace sighed, turning the necklace back in her hand once more, staring at the liquid inside, a sliver of a memory. The whole night remained a remarkable blur, but that little bit stood out. Expression softened, leaning over to rest the necklace back where it belonged, fingers patting the top of it. She held onto the glowstick, not because of that individual moment, but for the morning after.
Sitting in the boat house hall, eating horrible tuna sandwiches and feeling every single ache of a bad night out. An excellent night out. Remembering how infectious his presence, his humor and joy was. She loved him. There was no avoiding the word now, she had spoken it, and given it life. Somewhere in the storm, he’d burst into her chaotic life, creating an anchor in his wake. Lessons learned, words shouted, arguments had, but most of all, she found her best friend.
Fingers withdrew from the necklace, left in it’s novel place atop the desk beside one of Moxi’s hairpins and Ham’s broken chewtoy. A little place for family. From there she turned her eyes on the toddler sitting atop the carpet, hitting a block with his well beaten hammer. Work could be done later, she was lost in the warm happiness of it all, resting her chin in her hands.
“’Ey, ‘Am.”
“Ahaa Geesh?” A pause of hammer sounds.
“’Ave I told y’bout Th’Aristocrats?”
“Nam nah.”
“Well. One time....”
