Grace Lightman - Zero Impact
Getting to Know...
Grace Lightman.
Emerging electro-pop singer-songwriter Grace Lightman releases her conceptual debut album Silver Eater tomorrow (July 19).
Grace has been working towards her debut solo record for the past few years and her vision is finally realised in the form of Silver Eater. The album has been a collaborative effort between Grace as well as Ben Baptie who makes his producer debut on this record and creative partner / co-writer Patrick J Pearson - between the three of them they’ve created a truly unique record that encapsulates Grace’s surreal pop driven vision and unique artistry.
The London bred musician makes sense of a tangle of competing influences- ranging from David Lynch and Laurie Anderson to classic disco and melodic big-stakes pop to craft a sound that resists lazy characterisation. One part ABBA, two parts Twin Peaks, and mediated through the character of the eponymous Silver Eater - an extraterrestrial fallen to earth, doomed to imitate and fall in love with the very humans they must remain a fugitive from. With the release of Silver Eater, Lightman has achieved something fiendishly rare, a concept album that combines narrative ambition with a sly undercurrent of dark humour.
We had a quick chat with Grace all about Silver Eater, her latest single and video 'An Ordinary Life' and more. Read the Q&A below.
Hi Grace! You recently released your latest single and video 'An Ordinary Life'. What's the inspiration behind the track and it's visuals?
"Hi! The track is about wanting to fit into a world you know you can never really be a part of. Its a love letter to the human race, from the perspective of my alien alter ego the Silver Eater - whom the album is about. The visuals are a wistful documentation of the Silver Eater on the run from NASA, but leaving a trace of herself in the form of her hair as if she wants to be found be her confidants."
'An Ordinary Life' is taken from your upcoming debut album Silver Eater. What can you tell us about the record? How does it feel to be able to finally share it with the world?
"I am beyond excited to release this record. I have been brewing it for a while, and it was made exactly how I wanted it to be. It feels like one of the truest success's to be able to share it, and have the support of Handsome Dad Records and the people involved in the making of it."
You worked with Ben Baptie and Patrick J Pearson on Silver Eater. What kind of things did you learn from them and vice versa?
"Ben and Pat taught me everything I know about making a record, separately of each other and then ultimately we all learnt the rest together.
"Patrick sort of mentored me in songwriting when I first met him all those years ago, then we hit on an idea that inspired us to write an album. Pat and I are literally always learning from each other, we never want to be too comfortable in a writing routine.
"I met Ben making a record with my first ever band, and we realised we needed to keep it up because it felt right. It was only when Patrick and I had finished writing Silver Eater that Ben saw it needed to be made."
What was your favourite part recording Silver Eater and what do you hope fans will take away from it?
"My favourite part of recording was the moment we realised it was going to sound really amazing and then everything that followed comes in close second. I remember being in the studio working on the first 3 tracks and looking over to Ben and we just burst into hysterical laughter. That was our first session on Silver Eater.
"I hope people listen with intent but also have fun listening because there's a lot to take away from the album on one hand but on the other it is also just a lighthearted album made with love."
Finally, what else is next for you? Any shows in support of Silver Eater?
"Yes! Come to the Islington on 3rd October to see the Silver Eater in her entirety. I am also playing Bluedot festival the day the record is out, and Tramlines Fringe the following day in Sheffield. Lots to announce too!"
Silver Eater is out tomorrow.
