Two of my favorite gifts this Christmas ❤💫
My First Haircut
I trudge in sheepishly, avoiding the brightness of the open living room, switching quickly to muddy hands and grazed knees. Making sure to only shuffle slowly and quitely between the noisy interjections of the tv. I stop at it’s sudden silence, looking around to the now pitch black screen from behind the barricades of the earthy green couch, the one by the cabinet I shouldn’t go near, the one that shields me from the floor when it’s no longer floor and simply lava.
“Iwewe, mwana wa Isaac, wuya pano”
(Oi you, child of Isaac, come here)
It’s almost hard to stifle the giggle, the sound sends me back to the floor quicker than I can manage, and the stifled giggle comes out again seconds later, and I find myself met by those eyes, those eyes that follow over the back of the coach and rest onto me. Those eyes in which I fall into, and always feel safe.
My dreads, resting just shy of my armpits, are coloured auburn by the thick earthy mud I've spent hours rolling in. My face is decorated with the newest thickest gash, resting just under my brow.
Her arms reach over the coach, pulling me over and into her lap.
A sigh, a smile, and a brief kiss on my wounded brow.
“Imi, ko ma chigero ari papi?”
(so, where are the scissors?)
