i don't typically do this but i wanted to get into my thought process behind this one a little more in depth:
the initial inspiration for this one came after seeing this post by @sidgene. dog-coded speirs is always so brilliant to me, and i wanted to build on the idea of his being a sort of vengeful protector in the aftermath of grant getting shot, which is the angle i took for most of the video.
however!
i remember seeing a post some months back (that i can't for the life of me find anymore) that talked about speirs potentially feeling a bit of guilt over having been the one to give chuck the orders to go to the crossroads in the first place. and while obviously no one could have foreseen what was going to happen, guilt isn't necessarily a rational thing! and so i wanted to play with that idea a little bit, hence the clip of speirs giving the orders over the "who did that to you" lyric again.
i think chuck's face in that scene is also so good... he's obviously just upset in the moment cause it's annoying, but i think it's also got a really nice sense of foreboding to it as well (even if he doesn't know it lol). and then building further off this idea, the last scene of speirs walking away after not shooting the guy... i liked the bit of ambiguity there too, with both of them in the shot... speirs obviously blaming the guy who actually did the deed and shot him but maybe also internalizing some of it? is he also, in a sense, the fool that did that to grant? i just think it's a really fun idea to play around with and i hope that comes through in this video a little bit (it makes sense TO ME)!!
(i think it could also make for good fic content just saying......)

webgott, winnix, baberoe, luztoye, speirton, chuckspeirs, luzlip, malmuckpenk: big spoon or little spoon? basically cuddling dynamic. if it's romantic or platonic is up to you.
webgott - look, we know that these two will end up cuddling Web’s shark plushy because it’s huge and soft. but if there’s an off chance that the plushy is unavailable (Web washes it), then Web is the small spoon while Lieb latches on him from behind.
winnix - Dick is the big spoon fight me on this because it’s ingrain in him to protect so he’s gonna protect Nix by wrapping his arms around the man.
baberoe - Babe gives the best cuddle because he radiates warmth and usually this happens whenever Roe is back from work, exhausted to the bone.
luztoye - Toye is the big spoon because Luz can never stay still even for a few second so Toye just locks his arms around George and traps him there until the small man calms down.
speirton - hello yes, Lip gives the best cuddles because he has arms as big as mountain.
chuckspeirs - they wrap their arms around each other fight me on this okay I won’t accept anything else.
luzlip - why is this even a question? George’s arms are short, he couldn’t even wrap them half around Lip.
malmuckpenk: Malarkey gets to the be in the middle of this soft smush cuddle session because dude needs all the soft love.

The sun is high in the sky, directly above their heads to let them know it’s noon. With it being close to lunch time, a few of the guys are filing around the field as they go to search for some grub, but Grant stays where he lays, his hands propped behind his head and his legs crossed over one another.
Eventually, he’s the only one left sitting in the tall grass, but he doesn’t mind. The slice of solitude, if it can be considered that since there are other soliders only a few yards off, is nice. Plus, he’s exhausted and the tall grass is actually a nice bed.
So his eyes close as he drifts off, letting the sun heat his skin. There’s a part of him that’s anxious, knowing he shouldn’t let him fall asleep in a field. If he sleeps too long, he could wake up and the company could have moved out without him.
But his worries are soon gone as he feels a presence beside him. One of his brows lift first, followed by him opening one eye to peer up at the person joining him. He finds Speirs, staring down at him with a bored expression.
“Sergeant Grant,” Speirs greets with a jut of his head, acting all too casual.
Grant gets it. Casual is a way for Speirs to not feel guilty if Grant happens to get shot tomorrow. Speirs can always hide behind that front, instead of feeling pain for another lost man. But Grant pushes off the thought and gives Speirs a nod.
“Captain,” he returns, not bothering with any formal solute. “Care to join me?”
At the question, Speirs looks away from Grant in favor of looking across the field, either thinking about moving along or making sure that no one sees he’s actually enjoying someone else’s company who isn’t one of the other officers. Grant starts to think he should just wave him off when Speirs nods and falls into a sitting position.
It’s quiet for awhile, the two just wading in each other’s company. Grant keeps his eyes open now, staring up in the sky, and occasionally sparing Speirs a glance now and again. The captain, on the other hand, stares at his knees for quite some time before he abandons that and looks across the field instead.
“How are you liking the weather?” Grant tries, turning his head in the direction of his superior.
The last reaction Grant expected is what he gets. Speirs laughs at him, shaking his head and turning to share a smile. “It’s weather.” He answers, which lets Grant know that Speirs wouldn’t care if it was sunny or raining.
Grant only nods again as he lets his narrowed eyes turn towards the clouds. “I like it.” He answers honestly. How could he not? The clouds are something he could see at home, the grass reminds him of a field down the street of his house. In this moment he feels like home’s not so far after all.
Speirs only nods. “Yeah.”
Silence befalls them once again, but then Speirs’ name is being called by a familiar voice. Grant knows it’s Welsh, and he tries to ignore the disappointed pang he feels. Speirs will be off, and who knows when he’ll get to see a genuine smile from Ronald Speirs? Hell, if he’ll ever see him smile again.
Speirs gets up, wiping his hands off on his pants. Grant lets his eyes close in favor of saying a goodbye. He’ll just let the man walk off. That’s easiest.
He opens his eyes again as he peers up at Speirs, finding a small smile. He makes sure to catalog that to memory, for when he’ll need it in combat.
“Same time tomorrow?” Speirs presses, although there’s a light touch of amusement to his tone. Grant knows why. They won’t even be here in an hour. Easy Company will be off on a new mission, off to get shot at. But they can pretend.
So Grant huffs out a laugh, shaking his head. “Yeah,” he agrees. “I’ll be here.”
Ages and ages ago @steviewicks45 requested a GrantSpeirs fic of them eyefucking during the war, finally fucking and then Grant getting shot so here it is. All for you bestie! 💞
