Charles V borrowed money from German and Italian bankers and, in order to repay such loans, he relied on the proto-capitalist economy of the #netherlands 🇳🇱 and on the flows of gold and especially silver from South America to #spain🇪🇸 , which caused widespread inflation. Nicolas Perrenot de Granvelle (1486–1550), a Franc-Comtois politician served as a close trusted advisor to Emperor Charles V. He was made suzerain of the imperial city of Besançon and held an influential position in the Netherlands. From 1530 until his death he was one of the emperor's most trusted advisers in Germany.
