“WE BARE BEARS”

by The Ink&Clog and Woes

Formed in 2012 when a graphic designer and graffiti writer decided to pool their talents, Singapore artists Ink&Clog work across a variety traditional and digital media and report they have created murals in the UK, Japan, Korea, Australia, United States, and across Southeast Asia. In 2015 the two collaborated with Hawaiian-born Woes, aka Aaron Martin, to paint this wall at 4th St. and Linden Ave. in Long Beach, California for then Lyons Art Supplies, now Graphaids Long Beach. Based on a Cartoon Network show that told the story of three bear siblings and their awkward encounters with human society, Woes painted Grizzly on the left side of the doorway while Ink&Clog took on Panda and Ice Bear.  @inkandclog  @inkten  @clog_two  @woes  @graphaids_longbeach

Craola

“Having an overactive imagination since a very young age” Greg Simkins, aka Craola, says he has “become increasingly interested in the rabbit holes we fall down when daydreaming.” His childhood obsession with Disney cartoons and children’s stories has fueled further exploration of other lands to escape into, in the tradition of Narnia, Middle Earth, and Neverland. He has attached the all-encompassing label “The Outside” to the worlds of his imagination. Born in the Los Angeles suburb of Torrance in the mid-70s, Simkins adopted the name Craola at age 18, and has been working full-time as an artist since 2005—starting out as an illustrator and now most recently developing his own clothing line, IMSCARED, and applying his “warped imagination” to much sought after surrealist gallery pieces. This fanciful 2014 mural was done for ‘the outside’ of the old Graphaids store on La Cienaga Blvd. The store has now relocated across the street, but as of a month ago this piece continued to stand strong.  @craolasimkins  @graphaids

“OF OUR YOUTH”

“So today I’m trying to change a few things to rectify the situation of my past. So today I’m looking towards the future of our youth.” —Chato

In 2010 the highly-acclaimed duo of El Mac and Retna created this wall on the front of LA’s Graphaids store on S. La Cienega (the store is now relocated across the street). At the far end of this very long wall is El Mac’s equally impressive portrait of Chato (Ralph), who gave the pair these inspirational words as they spent time painting together in Skid Row, but the majority of the wall features a remarkable example of Marquis Lewis, aka Retna’s, signature constructed script. Derived from a unique combination of Gothic Script, Egyptian Hieroglyphics, Arabic, and Hebrew Retna’s work incorporates elements of fine art and graffiti resulting in what Artnet describes as “visual linguistics, urban poetics, and a timeless, unique power.”  @ironeyeretna  @mac_arte  @graphaids

“DALI IN THE WATER”

Eccentric and colorful Spanish surrealist, Salvador Dalí, was not one to shy away from grabbing public attention. Photographed and painted in any number of manners this David Flores mural reinterprets French photographer Jean Dieuzaide’s “Dali in the Water,” shot in 1953 in Catalonian fishing village turned tourist destination, Cadaqués. Ventura, California, based Flores is best known for his segmented “stained-glass” style which he has used to reinterpret the work of many well-known photographers, perhaps most notably a collaboration with Phil Stern using his portfolio of portraits of the Hollywood elite. The mix of monochrome with color used to highlight the flowers on Dalí’s trademark mustache make this striking work on the back of the old Graphaids store one my favorite works of Flores. With Graphaids now relocated across La Cienega in Culver City the future of this work is in question so check it out soon if you can. @davidfloresart  @graphaids
