As of 2016, the U.S. is imprisoning some 2.29 million people, producing the highest rate of incarceration in the world. How did this happen? As the director of The Sentencing Project, Marc Mauer has long been one of the country’s foremost experts on sentencing policy, race, and the criminal justice system. His 1999 book “Race to Incarcerate” became the essential text for understanding the exponential growth of the U.S. prison system; Michelle Alexander, author of the bestselling The New Jim Crow, calls it "utterly indispensable." In 2013, Sabrina Jones, member of the WW3 Illustrated collective and an acclaimed political comics creator, has collaborated with Mauer to adapt and update the original book into a vivid and compelling comics narrative. *We will note - although we love this book and Jones's artwork adds passion and compassion to a complex story, it doesn’t quite hit the mark in terms of ‘what we can do’ to fight this horrible system. For instance, it recommends working with politicians and business leaders to build a movement against mass incarceration; it does not mention formerly incarcerated individuals as being a crucial voice in that movement. We believe they are and should be. #comics #graphicnovels #graphicretelling #racetoincarcerate #sabrinajones #marcmauer #prisons #prisonabolition #USprisons #prisonindustrialcomplex https://www.instagram.com/p/BtJN61Gn7pk/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1bc71ay1tuquy
