A squatter, former anarchist punk, social activist and cartoonist, Seth Tobocman lived on Manhattan’s Lower East Side and participated in grassroots efforts to take over abandoned tenements in the late ‘80s and early '90s. 

This nonfiction graphic novel combines stark black and white woodcut-style drawings with passionate, brutally honest narration to tell an incredibly compelling history of urban housing.

After studying martial arts, divination, swordplay, the uses of magic, and the wisdom of the I Ching, Hong Kil Dong sets off on a quest for his destiny. He leads a band of men to right the injustices shown to the peasants by some powerful and corrupt merchants, ministers, and monks. Hong Kil Dong can then claim his rightful role and become a wise and just leader. Today's #SJComix365 is "The Assignment", a short anthology of "Assigned Male" webcomics by transgender artists and activist Sophie Labelle. It covers the beginning of friendship between two of the comic's main characters, Stephie and Frank, and how they first met. When Stephie gets paired up with a boy she doesn't know for a classroom assignment, she is understandably apprehensive. In Frank's words, "I don't want to be with her, she has the genders!" (a hilarious if problematic placeholder for cooties or some other kid-hysteria). Frank also remarks that he doesn't want anyone to think he's gay because they see Stephie at his house. Later, he insists that this was a joke, but Stephie is hurt. The short narrative shows both of the kids working out their misgivings for each other to other characters, overcoming their fears of being hurt or misunderstood, and becoming friends. If your familiarity with “political comics” immediately makes you think of editorial political cartoons, you would think this would be a book full of silly caricatures of cops, but APB is much more special than that.
